Being A Greenkeeper Is Tough
Thursday, July 1st, 2010I have not lived for a massive amount of time but I have done is had a fair number of jobs, one of the most interesting ones that I have taken part in is being a greenkeeper’s assistant. When I first turned up and was told of all of the things it takes to make the golf course look as good as it does, I was shocked.
Getting up at 4am in the morning was the hardest part and starting at 5.30 was not easy either but after the initial shock it was okay. The great thing about doing this is that you finish at around 12.30 so you have most of the day spare to do pretty much what you want.
The main role that I had to take part in was the raking of the bunkers and although this sounds like a boring task it wasn’t really that bad when you think about it. Okay so raking kind of puts your back out after a while and raking 154 bunkers in one morning is a big thing to do but you meet all kinds of interesting people. You are able to get to know the course a lot more and you kind of have respect for it more than anything.
The people you meet are of course golfers and they usually compliment the course which is great for self esteem when you are working on it all of the time. Once the morning was complete we would head back into the greenkeepers room and have lunch on the house. We got to choose anything from the menu which was always good and a full English breakfast was usually the top of my list.
So there you have it really, working on a golf course isn’t as bad as people first think.
So charge up those golf batteries and those UPS batteries and start playing golf. Mobility scooter batteries can be used for this purpose too.
