Explore Waccamaw Golf Trail for Best Myrtle Beach Golf!
Thursday, October 8th, 2009For special Myrtle Beach golf packages, follow along the Historic Waccamaw River as you enjoy a great round or two of golf along the Waccamaw Golf Trail!
Waccamaw a name originating with the ancient Waccamaw river dwellers from North to South Carolina. The Waccamaw River (perhaps better known as the Intracoastal Waterway in that area) flows from North Carolina to Winyah Bay, in Georgetown, South Carolina and now instead of old rice fields and former plantations, the river meanders past some of the finest Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island Golf.
Wild life abounds along this river trail and you might sight an American Black Bear, a Pileated Woodpecker or two, Black Swallowtail Butterflies as well at other unusual flora and fauna. The area stands on its own, but you’re only 15 minutes from Myrtle Beach proper activities as well.
Unlike the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama, which offers golf courses strung out along many miles, this is a concentration of 12 great golf courses all within minutes of each other. These golf courses are intrinsically interesting, following the hills and dales of former rice plantations. Golf awards are many among this group of golf courses. Golf Digest has issued “America’s Top 100 Public Courses to four of them. Willbrook is a favorite for the ladies and the list goes on.
Can you imagine access to three of the Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” list as well one of the only three 5 Star courses in the Southeast all within 15 minutes of each other? That means convenience with a capitol “C” for you and your group of golfers.
Don’t miss TPC and Wachesaw Plantation East, as well as Gary Player’s Blackmoor at the north end of Waccamaw Golf Trail. Travel a few more minutes south and you’ll be the Litchfield area of Pawleys Island Mainland, play golf at Litchfield Golf Club, the Tradiiton, Willbrook or River Club for starters. Just a couple of miles past Litchfield you’ll find the Heritage, Caledonia and True Blue on the Old Kings Highway and on the Highway 17 Bypass you can play Pawleys Plantation and Founders Club.
What a golfing experience…you don’t find golf courses like these clustered together everyday no matter where you play!
Beautiful Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, has enviable views of the old rice fields from it’s club house and sometimes the comments from the porch that overlooks the 18thhole will hassle you, but never doubt you are playing one of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses” as named by Golf Digest. Noted for it’s outstanding scenery, you can spot the old rice fields from the clubhouse, azaleas and magnolias will greet you in the spring. Built on the original site of “Waverly Plantation”, the grounds date back to 1750 and before the golf course was built in the mid ’90s was home to “Ducks Unlimited” and other fantastic parties. Doc Lachicotte & Wilson Springs, the founders of Caledonia can be spotted many times at the little “fish camp” just before you make the turn into the road leading to the clubhouse. True Blue, owned by the same developers gets ongoing Golf digest’s Awards and is “must play” when you go for Myrtle Beach golf.
Do yourself a favor and consider these super golf courses everytime you come to Myrtle Beach. Don’t stop with two or three golf courses, play them all! These golf courses are a glimpse into an unhurried life with beautiful surroundings, try them if you want to experience true Southern hospitality.
